When you sell a business, an effective training period benefits everyone. As you will likely provide some measure of seller financing in a deal, it’s in your best interest to set the seller up for future success.
The length of the transition period is really dependent on the nature of your business and your role. The strength of your management team, customer concentration issues, and buyer competencies will all affect the transition time.
Generally, for businesses in the lower middle market, expect to spend at least three months on-site with the buyer and another three-months available for remote consultation.
